History

Bell, Sons & Co. (Druggists) Ltd (Bell's Healthcare) has been established in 1847 and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Marksans Pharma Ltd., one of the largest pharmaceutical manufacturers based in Mumbai, India with interests in the UK, USA and Australia.

Over the years, we have achieved considerable growth and made substantial investments to increase capacity. Bell's Healthcare is committed to improving efficiency year on year.

Bell's Healthcare manufacture and supply a range of branded and own label healthcare pharmaceutical products; both licensed and unlicensed therapeutic areas including cough, cold, pain relief, gastro-intestinal, ear care and skincare for the UK and export. We also contract manufacture.

  • Established in 1847 as a pharmacy in Preston and during the nineteenth century moved to the city of Liverpool.
  • The factory was twice destroyed during World War II. Just after the war the business was transferred to Southport and contacts re-established with export customers.
  • 1978 the business was relocated to a purpose built site at the present location in Slaidburn Crescent Southport.
  • The facility is equipped to manufacture liquids, ointments and powders and established as a licensed Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Assembly site.
  • 1984 acquired Parkinsons of Burnley, with selected products transferred to Southport
  • The company was purchased by the Hale Group (Widnes) in 1989 becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Hale Group PLC.
  • An additional warehouse was acquired for components in 1992
  • A sachet manufacturing unit was commissioned in 1999 which is now used for powder formulation, blending and packing.
  • A dedicated warehouse was constructed in 2000 for Finished Goods.
  • Extensions were added to both the north and south side of building in summer 2002 which added a further 860 sq ft to the factory floor space.
  • A new Oral Liquids Manufacturing Facility was constructed in south side extension and commissioned in June 2005.
  • Bell's business was purchased by Marksans Pharma in Jan 2008. Marksans Pharma are an Indian based organisation with pharmaceutical sites in both India and Australia. The Marksans plant in Goa is both MHRA and FDA approved.
  • In September 2008 Marksans Pharma purchased Relonchem Ltd. (Bell's sister company) adding further to the growth of the Bell's business both in the UK and abroad.
